The United States Healthcare system is not broken, in fact it is a provider of last resort to those socialized medicine countries such as Canada, who’s Leader had to come to the United States to receive much needed heart surgery. His own socialized healthcare system contained a natural blockage preventing him from immediately receiving the care he required. Our healthcare system, however, does need tweaking. Our costs in many cases are unreasonable. These costs can be reduced in the following manner.
Health Care-Health care costs can be reduced by 20 to 30 per cent with the following changes to the system:Prescription Costs. Prescription costs can be reduced immediately by doing the same thing that countries with socialized medicine do, that is negotiate as a nation with pharmaceutical companies. Countries with socialized medicine do this. This leaves the United States holding the bag. The United States get stuck with paying the overhead, and profit for the pharmaceutical companies, while the other countries save money at our expense.
Medical Pricing. Most hospitals give insurance companies lower prices than the walk in customer. Walk in rates are typically twice the price that insurance companies pay. End this practice.
Tort Reform. The average price for medical liability insurance in Maryland is $160,000 dollars per year per physician. This is a simple meal ticket for lawyers, some of which earn up to $500.00 per hour. The solution of this waste of money is to establish a board to review medical problems and allocate funds to compensate patients for practical losses and expenses. Do not compensate patients for pain and suffering. If a doctor or hospital is incompetent they need to be removed from the healthcare system. The review board may be composed of both doctors, who realize the difficulties of their profession, balanced with civilians who understand the problems of patients. These citizens may volunteer for this unpaid service.
Hospital acquired (Nosocomial) infections cost hospitals up to Thirty Billion Dollars each year. 100,000 patients per year die of hospital acquired infections while 3,000,000 patients are unnecessarily infected. Nationwide infection control standards and practices need to be established and put into practice.
All citizens need to buy mandatory insurance from commercial companies with easy paperwork. This reduces the overall insurance prices throughout the United States and will be similar to mandatory insurance coverage for automobiles.
